Is dependency on technology bad?

By Aliya Azhar

imagesOk, I understand the fact that without fancy gadgets we cannot survive at least in this century. This is growing obsession among people now a days . They would much rather interact with their smartphones than with other human beings. While Smartphones have made life easier, according to study conducted,   the love for technology has become an addiction. We miss out so many gorgeous things around us just because we are too busy checking out our notifications and replying tweets.

Many people think ‘ oh so what if we are  dependent on this little thingy like smartphone or other technological devices, they make our work easy, and also they let us stay connected to the world’ . Alright then what is that little  thingy stuffed inside your head for ? Which is called “brain”. Now the scientist tell us that the technology is changing the microcellular structure of our brain, because we compute mails and texts minute by minute. Brain is that technical machine which has been hidden under dust for so long and we hardly make use of it. How many of us actually remember what they had for lunch yesterday ? how many of us actually remember the lecture which was taught in last class? The human brain is under the threat of modern technology.

Just imagine this, we have become so dependent on technology that we cannot think of spending ‘a’ day without our oh-so-smart Smartphones? Well going a day without cell phone can also be a challenge for some .

Wake up and pay attention to the world around you, why are we making a transition from human beings to mindless beings. Beauty of the world around us cannot be seen or felt through these devices we have to have our eyes open and look around us.

  1. Wait a second… yesterday, I ate omelette because ‘Amma’ has made ‘karaley’ for lunch !! And in last poetry class on Friday, we have discussed the poem ‘A Starry Night’ by Anne Sexton !!
And Yes, I always wonder (in our Pakistani context) who are those people that are so much addicted that they never get tired of using these technical machines. I mean, a point came in each and every person’s life when one wish not even to see their cell phones.
It’s ironic how we use technology in order to stay in touch with our social circle when we are not even familiar with the people living around us.
And I extremely agree with your view of using ‘eyes’ instead of these devices, because in my case this excessive use of laptop lead my head aching and making things blur !!

  2. Ohhh Yes!! It is not denied and we all know that extremity of anything can be harmful. Then what about Technology??
Over dependence on technology can be an important unintended adverse consequence of today’s generation specially children. Technology is distracting from school work, socializing, and even eating. It can lead to further addictive behaviors like pornography and online poker are just a click away. This isn’t a very attractive habit to bring into the professional world either. It leads to lack of concentration in classes. The trend towards e-learning lacks human contact as well as the encouragement and support provided by in-person. Technology can mean a loss of communication and interactive skills for tech addicted students.
In short, if we won’t use technology properly that’d be alarming situation.

  3. I think being dependent on technology is a bad thing, we have gotten so everything has to be done through technology then we wonder why there aren’t any job out here, the more we depend on technology the less we are needed. you can through everything through either phone or computer, we are getting so lazy we don’t think we should have to think for anything , it’s good to have the resources, but bad to depend so highly on them.
Moreover this also kills our creative power and don’t also us to become a critical thinker.
Technology itself is not inherently good or bad, but it can be used for either. Think of all the ways we use technology every day to help us learn, accomplish things, connect with people or do simple tasks more quickly. It can certainly lead to decreased productivity and wasted time though. And then there’s the dark side which ranges from annoying to truly scary. But I think overall, the positives outweigh the negatives.
As for our dependence on it, I think dependence on anything can create problems. We shouldn’t let ourselves forget how to live without the crutch of technology. It’s good to take a break now and then, and get back to basics. Sounds like an interesting read.

  4. ah…!!!! totally a cell-addictor dont know how to comment… (:p)
i totally agree that yes we have been *ruled* by smart phones these days. We do prefer to spend our free time even the time we are supposed to be doing something else, on our smartphones.
people nowadays love to sit for hours on a place where they find internet connection (wi-fi) rather than spending time at thier relatives’ places. this is the scenario we are living in because of technology.
smart phones have made our lives totally different from the lives of our parents and grand parents. technology has shaped our thoughts in such a way that we seems helpless without technology….
(truly speaking i cant imagine my life without a smart phone now) and this is the same stuation of people living in this era.
but yes we have to change our thoughts and we should try to stop technology from ruling our thoughts so that we can be called as alive people rather than ROBOTS….
